Scholars of Shen Zhou

I compiled these biographies of Sun He (Sun Jian's adopted son, Sun Shao's uncle, and Sun Huan's father), Sun Huan, Sun Ben (Sun Jian's eldest nephew and actual heir), Sun Fu (Sun Ben's little brother), and Lu Fan. I submitted these, but they have yet to be posted.

Lu Fan (Ziheng)

Served: Yuan Shu, Sun Ce, Sun Quan
Lifespan: 165 - 229
Relations: Lu Xian, Lu Ju (sons)

Lu Fan, styled Ziheng, was born in Runan. His wife was the daughter of Liu Shi, a rich official. He served under Yuan Shu briefly, but then met the young Sun Ce and wished to serve him. He brought Sun Ce a hundred troops. Before deciding to hire Lu Fan, Sun Ce tested his skills in a game of Weiqi. Sun Ce led off with a move that gave Lu Fan a perfect opportunity, and Lu Fan seized it, pointing out Sun Ce's error. Sun Ce was impressed and hired him. (This game of Weiqi is actually the first one to be recorded move for move, thus securing Lu Fan and Sun Ce's place in history.)

Lu Fan was one of Sun Ce's first advisors, joining him around the same time as Zhu Zhi and Zhou Yu. Lu Fan helped Sun Ce defeat Lu Gang at Lu Jiang and Liu Yao in Mo Ling, earning the prefecture of Wanling. He destroyed the bandits at Danyang and was again promoted to Chief Controller.

Lu Fan and Xu Yi led Sun Ce's attack against Yan Baihu, and Lu Fan defeated Chen Mu. Lu Fan also helped Sun Ce defeat Zu Lang and Taishi Ci. Sun Ce appointed him General of the Gentleman of the Household Who Pacifies Rebels.

Serving under Sun Ce, Lu Fan was in charge of the army's finances. Often times, he refused Sun Quan from receiving money for personal use. When Sun Quan matured, he respected Lu Fan's honesty and integrity. When Sun Ce died, Lu Fan mourned at Wu before coming to serve Sun Quan.

At Chi Bi, Lu Fan served under Zhou Yu and earned the rank of Major-General. He also suggested wedding Sun Quan's younger sister to Liu Bei in an attempt to take back Jing. When Guan Yu was slain, Lu Fan was appointed Governor of Jian Ye.

When Cao Xiu invaded Wu, Lu Fan had under his command Quan Cong, Xu Sheng, and Sun Shao. He drove off Cao Xiu and was promoted to General of the Front and was awarded jie.

In 229, the 7th year of Huang Wu, Lu Fan was appointed briefly as Commander-in-Chief, but died shortly thereafter. Sun Quan mourned his passing, and shortly thereafter, Lu Xian, Fan's son, died as well. Lu Ju succeeded Lu Fan.

Sun Ben (Boyang)

Sun Ben was born in Fuchun county in the Wu territory to Sun Qiang (styled Shengtai), the twin brother of Sun Jian. He was the eldest of two sons. Sun Qiang died early, and so his sons were taken in by their uncle, Sun Jian. Sun Ben followed his uncle in battle after Sun Jian's return from Luo Yang, and led a unit during Sun Jian's attack on Liu Biao. When Sun Jian died, Sun Ben, being older than Sun Ce, gathered many of the soldiers and generals and went to Yuan Shu, who had been Sun Jian's liege.

Sun Ben served under Yuan Shu for a time, along with Sun Jian's brother-in-law, Wu Jing (the brother of Sun Jian's wife). He served as Inspector of Yu province, but the position was mostly honorary, for he was still young. He met Sun Ce's sworn brother, Zhou Yu, and joined him to aid Wu Jing, who was under attack from Liu Yao. Sun Ce soon arrived as well, and both Zhou Yu and Sun Ben joined his army. Wu Jing was saved, and Sun Ben was reunited with his family under Yuan Shu.

As a reward for his duties, Sun Ben was made Grand Administrator of Yuzhang, while Sun Fu was sent to Luling. When Yuan Shu went out to battle Liu Bei, Sun Ben was assigned to defend Shou Chun. When Yuan Shu declared himself emperor, Sun Ben, Wu Jing, Zhou Yu, and Lu Su all abandoned him and joined Sun Ce. Sun Ben's wife and children, however, were detained in the city and were unable to join him until later.

In AD 197, Sun Ce and Lu Bu allied with each other to defeat Yuan Shu. Sun Ben and Sun Fu led the attack against Liu Xun, easily scoring a victory.

In AD 200, Sun Ce passed away, and both Sun Ben and Sun Fu were uneasy about the young Sun Quan being his heir, both being his elder. The two were stationed in Yuzhang when Cao Cao began his advance southward. Sun Fu wrote a letter intending to surrender to Cao Cao, but he was stripped of all rank, and his advisors were executed. Sun Ben also was contemplating surrender, but it is said that Zhu Zhi dissuaded him, and he served at Chi Bi. A few months after, however, Sun Ben passed away of illness. His son, Sun Lin, would succeed him.

At the time of his death, it is said that an edict was in Sun Ben's possession - an edict delivered from the capital offering him a high rank under Cao Cao. It is possible that Sun Ben died of distress.

Sun Fu (Guoyi)

Sun Fu, styled Guoyi, was the second son of Sun Qiang, Sun Jian's twin brother. He followed Sun Ce in his later campaigns against Yuan Shu and Liu Xun, earning great merits by raiding Ling Yang and Lu Jiang. When Liu Xun was defeated, Sun Fu was put in charge of rebuilding the city's walls, which he accomplished very well. He earned the title of General Who Pacifies the South.

Before the Battle of Chi Bi, Sun Fu decided to surrender to Cao Cao. To this end, he sent a letter to Cao Cao proclaiming his intent to surrender, but this letter was intercepted. Sun Quan angrily stripped Sun Fu of all rank and imprisoned him, but spared him on account of filial duty. Sun Fu was released and died a few years after the battle, never again having a military command. His sons, however, all received rank.

Sun He (Bohai)

Sun He, styled Bohai, was originally from the Yu clan, which was distantly related to the Sun clan through a female relative. When he was a youth, Sun Jian adopted him into his family. He served as Sun Jian's bodyguard, and when Sun Jian died, he followed Sun Ce. He also introduced Sun Ce to his nephew, Sun Shao, and asked him to adopt the youth.

When Sun Yi was assassinated, Sun He was enraged and tried to get justice for his death, but was slain by Gui Lan and Dai Yuan. Sun Shao, being his oldest biological relative, inherited his position.

Sun Huan (Shuwu)

Relations: Sun He (father); Sun Jian (grandfather); Sun Ce, Sun Quan, Sun Yi, Sun Kuang, Sun Lang (uncles); Sun Shao (biological cousin, also foster cousin adopted by Sun Ce); Sun Shao (the biological son of Sun Ce)*, Sun Deng, Sun Lu, Sun He, Sun Ba, Sun Fen, Sun Xiu, Sun Liang, Sun Tai, Sun Song (cousins); Sun Zhu, Sun Yi, Sun Jun (brothers)

Sun Huan, styled Shuwu, was the third son of Sun He, Sun Jian's foster son. Sun He was originally from the Yu clan and was the brother of Sun Shao's father. Sun Shao was adopted by Sun Ce, thus making Huan and Shao foster cousins as well as biological cousins. Sun Huan's older brother, Sun Yi, died early, while Sun Zhu and Sun Jun both lived prosperous lives.

Sun Huan volunteered to lead a force against Liu Bei when Liu Bei marched on Wu for revenge. He was only twenty-five at the time. He was granted a command alongside Zhu Ran. They led a significantly smaller force against Liu Bei, but after a victory against Huang Zhong, Sun Huan was quickly overwhelmed by Hu Ban and Zhu Ran's navy was cut off from the battle due to a Shu ploy. Sun Huan remained resolute, however, and fell back to Yi Ling, requesting reinforcements from Lu Xun. Hu Ban and Zhang Nan fiercely besieged Yi Ling, but when Lu Xun destroyed the Shu army nearby, they both rode off to assist Feng Xi. Taking advantage of his situation, Sun Huan struck out and his army slew both Zhang Nan and Feng Xi.

Sun Huan continued his advance, blocking off Liu Bei's main retreat road. Liu Bei was forced to scramble up a hill to avoid Sun Huan's army, further demoralizing the Shu army with the help of Zhu Ran.

Sun Huan's later actions are not thoroughly documented, but he did receive the rank of Marquis of Dan Tu.

*There are two Sun Shaos. One is of the Yu clan and was adopted by Sun Ce. The second one is the biological son of Sun Ce born after his death to the Lady Qiao. This Sun Shao served as Sun Quan's second-in-command shortly before Sun Quan declared himself Emperor as Wu, but died young. His son, Sun Feng, was an extremely talented man, but he was killed because many favored him ascending to the Wu throne.

Lu Fan is such a good general. He is greatly underrated. Such a shame.

Also, in Dongkou, his army was sick and there was a storm on is navy yet he won. And he served as a brilliant advisor for Sun Ce too.

A shame that Sun Huan's actions after Liu Bei's invasion were not well documented - I had always hoped that SGZ would go into greater deal of Sun Huan than SGYY. Still, great work, Sun Gongli.

Yeah, Sun Huan is definitely one of the greater, most underrated generals in Wu's middle days.

I also wanted to do a biography on the other Sun Shao, the one who was born after Sun Ce's death. But apparently, the other ministers held a grudge against him due to the fact that he was given the post of prime minister before Zhang Zhao, and no biography for him, or his son, Sun Feng, exist.

Lu Fan... as far as I can tell, he scored as many amazing victories as more well-known generals. And still, he doesn't even appear in Dynasty Warriors and has no statistics above 80 in Romance... I think Lu Fan was probably one of the best commanders of the time, honestly.

That's because in the novel, all Lu Fan does is advise Sun Quan on the marriage with SSX and Liu Bei. Sad, really. Some of his acts are truly amazing. His SGZ bio also doesn't go into as much info as GoS. From there, he appears to be one of Wu's best due to all the great stuff he did.

I don't think Lu Su served him at all. In SGYY I believe, Yuan Shu asked Lu Su to serve him, but Lu Su declined. Then I believe Yuan Shu wanted to exexcute him. In SGZ, Yuan Shu went to recruit Lu Su, but Lu Su went south with a couple of hundred soldiers to go to Zhou Yu.
